FAQs

We currently offer three Vertical Blind systems that utilise different headrails. See below for the dimensions of each system illustrated with cross-section diagrams.

Classic Vertical Headrail

Sloping Vertical Headrail

Let’s say you’ve ordered five motorised Roller Blinds and one of them came with the wrong fabric. That means you’re going to have to go back to your client’s house and refit a replacement blind. For instance, if that blind costs £100 and that returned visit to site with your fitter is going to cost £50, including fuel and time, you can choose what you pay for that blind and what you deem is fair to cover the cost of that £50. Then, just get in touch with us and we will immediately raise a credit note to cover your expenses proportionately to the cost of the blind.

The service doesn’t cover things that are out of our control. So for example, if the order is misrouted or delayed by the carriers, or if we’re knee-deep in water because of a flood, or we’re battling fire with our watering cans, or an international crime network decides that they want to steal your parcel etc. – you get the idea!

In a 1:1 mechanism, one revolution of the chain cog equals one revolution of the cord drum. A 1:4 mechanism utilises a gearbox which decreases the ratio by 4, meaning that one revolution (360 degrees) of the chain cog would turn the cord drum inside a headrail only by 90 degrees. Simply put, the 1:1 mechanism is fast but stiffer to operate and the 1:4 mechanism is slow but easier to operate.

Learn more in the blog: What’s the difference between 1:1 and 1:4 Roman Blind mechanisms?

1:1 Standard Roman Blind Mechanism

Blinds with 1:1 mechanisms are ideal for smaller, lighter blinds. Also if you want to avoid drilling the walls to install a chain tensioner, the system is suitable to use a cord breakaway device to render your blind child safe, therefore easier to fit. Another advantage of a 1:1 mechanism is that it is faster when operating the blind.

1:4 Standard Roman Blind Mechanism

The advantage of 1:4 mechanisms is that they are suitable for any size blind – big or small and with heavy fabric. They are easier and smoother to operate. On the other hand, the disadvantage of a 1:4 mechanism is that it is slower and the blind will take longer to pull up. Due to child-safety requirements, the chains must be 1500mm from the floor so sometimes you’ll have to use chains with shorter drops.

As the 1:4 mechanism requires more pulling to move the fabric, the chain breakaway connectors are typically not recommended for this system and you’ll have to fix the operating chain to the wall with a tensioning device.

Elite 1:4 Breakaway Roman Blind Mechanism

Similar to its standard counterpart, the 1:4 gear ratio allows users to handle the traditionally heavy fabrics found on most Roman blinds, with a lifting capacity of 10kg so it’s suitable for any blind size. Another advantage of this breakaway mechanism is that you don’t have to worry about applying any other safety devices to render the blind child safe – an ideal option for clients who are looking to create safe spaces.

What makes this breakaway device stand out is how easily a detached operating chain can be returned. With no components coming loose and landing under the fridge, and nothing to unlock or open, users can confidently reinstate the chain themselves in less time than it would take to call you back to the site.

Yes, Cassetted Roller Blinds come with a bottom rail that fits across the bottom of the blind to block the light coming through the gap between the windowsill and the blind’s bottom bar.

Depending on the fitting scenario (top or face-fix), the bottom rail can be fixed behind or in front of the bottom bar – see below.

Top-fix installation

Face-fix installation

Cassetted Roller Blinds are available in two cassette sizes.

If you ordered your roller blinds with a side guide wire option, the wires with their fitting components will be delivered with your blinds. The side guide wires can only be installed on-site.

In short, no.

We recommend avoiding aftermarket adjustments, like cutting a blind to a shorter width in particular, as there is always a risk of damaging the product. However, if a blind is too wide because of a mismeasurement or another reason that makes it entirely redundant then there’s nothing to lose! We’d suggest tightly securing the blind and making a quick clean cut with a chop saw but, as you can imagine, there are many factors including the composition of the hardware and fabric type that could lead to damage.

Can we cut it down for you?

If the error is ours, we will absolutely do whatever is necessary to ensure you are provided with the blinds you need and in perfect condition. If not, then the cost becomes prohibitive. On an average blind, you can expect labour to make up approximately 40% of the cost. This coupled with delivery costs to and from our workshop and the fact that the blind probably won’t come out of the equation in a particularly good condition, means we will usually decline to cut your blinds down.

Double Roller Blinds, also known as “day and night” or “zebra” shades, are a popular type of window covering that can provide a range of benefits: high-level of light control, energy efficiency, privacy, style, motorisation options, and durability.

The main difference between the products is simply the frame and variety of options they come with. Subsequently, it comes down to your client’s personal tastes, but whichever system they will decide upon, they will find it extremely functional, easy to operate and child-friendly.

Standard Pleated Blind Headrail

Motorised Pleated Blind Headrail

Shaped Roof Pleated Blinds

When measuring for shaped Roof Pleated Blinds, it is very important to note that the top rail has a minimum width of 100mm, and allowances must be made on-site when measuring.

Motorised Tensioned Roof Pleated Blinds

When measuring for Tensioned Roof Pleated Blinds, please provide three width and two drop measurements – even if they are just a millimetre or two different. This will allow to tension the blind accurately in our workshop, leaving you to do nothing but fit the blind.

Regardless of whether you’re placing your order online, by email or by phone – providing correct measurements is very important. Here are the two simple steps to help you get them right, every time.

Step 1. Check if your blind is going to fit inside or outside the recess

If your window is in a recess, then you have an option of fitting inside the recess, or you can fit just outside of the recess so the blind overlaps the window. This helps to keep out more light and provides more insulation.

Step 2. Measuring your window

Tip: Measure your window with a metal tape measure and in millimeters or inches.

If you want your blinds to fit into a recess

Measure the width in three places first, then the drop (also in three places). You call this a ‘recess size’, and when you order, you just need to give the smallest width and drop measurements. It is very important to give us the width first, then the drop.

If you want your blinds to fit outside the recess

Measure the width first, then the drop. You are best allowing a minimum overlap on the width of the window of 75mm (3”) on either side of the blind. It is very important to give us the width first, then the drop. When ordering, you call this a ‘blind size’.

When measuring for roller blinds with joining brackets, you’ll be required to provide measurements for each blind that is going to be fitted into your window. It’s very important to submit the width first, then the drop.

Measure the width first and add 7mm, then the drop. Repeat the same process for another blind or blinds.

Example:
Width: 1000mm + 7mm = 1007mm
Drop: 1500mm

If you want your blinds to fit outside the recess

Allow 75mm overlap on the width and then add 7mm, next measure the drop. Repeat the same process for another blind.

Example:
Width: 1000mm + 75mm + 7mm = 1082mm
Drop: 1700mm

Note: We use roller blinds for the purpose of this demonstration, however, the same principle applies to all other blind types.

As a rule of thumb, fuses are rated according to the power rating of the appliance and appliances rated up to about 700 watts should have a 3-amp fuse.

The rated current of motors used in our mains powered blinds is 0.53-0.63 Amp, and they have a power rating of between 121-155W.

So, if you use a cable plug or connect up to 4 motorised blinds to a spur a 3 amp fuse will be sufficient to protect the cabling and motor or motors. If you run more than 4 blinds off a single spur use a 5 amp fuse.

Plugs are typically pre-fitted to portable appliances and devices (e.g. lamps, kettles, toasters etc) whereas a blind, once installed, remains in situ and is not portable. For this reason, the power cable of the mains powered blind motor that we supply does not come fitted with a plug or fuses. When planning for the installation of mains powered blinds, it is normal to connect the blind cable directly to a switched fused spur. Installation of the fused spur and connection of the blind to the fused spur would normally be carried out by an electrician.

1. Motor Indicator

Whilst charging your Dream Range USB Battery Motor an indicator light on the motor shows whether the battery is fully charged or still charging. See below.

* This function can be turned ON/OFF by holding the DOWN button on a remote for 5sec.

2. Connector App

If you’re using the DreamHub with Connector App to control your Dream Range blinds from your smartphone, you can also monitor the battery charge level in the app.

We suggest a 6-8 hour charge of the battery for an average six months of use.

What does 2600 Mah mean?
The rating 2600mAh (or 2.6Ah) means the battery will produce 2600mA for one hour, or 1000mA for 2.6 hours of indeed 1mA for 2600 hours. The rating is the current multiplied by the time the battery can produce that current.

Yes, the battery can be easily detached which is a very useful feature when it needs recharging and the power socket is not in close proximity.

Window shadings equipped with uni-directional motors offer remote operation but have a limitation – they can only receive instructions. This limitation prevents them from being seamlessly integrated into smart settings, as they lack the ability to send feedback or data. On the other hand, bi-directional motors can both receive and transmit information, making them suitable for integration into smart home systems, where they can communicate their status and respond to commands, enhancing the overall automation and control experience.

Antimicrobial is an agent that seals off the surface of the fabric and stops microorganisms from penetrating it which effectively slows down their growth within the internal structure of the fabric at the smallest of scales. It’s worth underlining here that we take for granted that antimicrobial agents would kill all dangerous microbes, however, its main purpose is to stop them from penetrating and multiplying inside the fabric.

Most of the antimicrobial agents used in commercial fabrics are biocides. These biocides contain particles of silver, utilising their bio-resistant properties. Fabric treated with a biocide is protected from undesirable bacterial and fungal infection. The active agent protects the user from microorganisms for aesthetic, hygiene, or medical reasons, and protects the fabric from biodeterioration caused by mould, mildew, and fungi.

Microorganism growth in fabric causes a range of undesirable effects, not only on the fabric itself but also on the user. Some effects include the generation of unpleasant odour, fabric structural damage that reduces its mechanical strength, stains and discolouration and an increased likelihood of contamination.

A – fabric treated with an antimicrobial biocide. B – non-antimicrobial fabric.

Yes, roller blinds can be suitable for bathrooms. However, it’s important to choose the right type of roller blind to ensure it can withstand the moisture and humidity levels typically found in a bathroom.

For example, it’s best to choose roller blinds that are specifically designed for use in bathrooms, such as those made from moisture-resistant materials like PVC, vinyl or moisture-resistant fabrics. These materials are less likely to absorb moisture and develop mold or mildew.

You may also want to consider roller blinds that are easy to clean, such as those with a wipeable surface, as bathrooms tend to accumulate dirt and grime over time.

Overall, as long as you choose the right type of roller blind and take appropriate care of it, roller blinds can be a practical and stylish window treatment option for bathrooms.

Minimum 6 to 8 months before needing to be recharged.

Yes, both Dream and Somfy Curtain Motors have a manual override option known as ‘PULL TO START.’ This means that, regardless of the remote control option, a simple manual pull on the curtains will automatically override it and open or close your curtains.

Also, in the event of a power loss to the motor, the curtains can still be manually opened or closed.

To face-fix the Capital Fascia, you’ll need to use Fascia Clips in conjunction with Threaded Brackets.

Both variants can be installed as a recess or face-fixed coverings so the only difference between them really is their height. This flexibility in positioning means they accommodate any blind type and even more than one at a time.

To determine which variant to choose, the total clearance of the blind and all its fixings when in a fully open position should be considered. This will be subject to how the blind is fixed, window size and blind type.

For illustration, we–re using a simple range of average roller blinds. The roll widths provided are based on a thick roller fabric such as Quad 1% at a drop of 3000mm.
